He is internationally recognized for his expertise as a diagnostic surgical pathologist and as a distinguished researcher and teacher. He is also known for his seminal work on the measurement and use of microvessel density (an index of tumor vascularity) as a prognostic factor in cancer. His research has been profiled in numerous journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and Science.
