Dr. O’Neill joined Abrazo West Campus Trauma Center in 2014 as the Associate Trauma Director and quickly was promoted to the Trauma Medical Director. For the past 10 years, he has worked in Phoenix at Maricopa Medical Center as a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon as well as the Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. In 2007, Dr. O’Neill founded the Valley’s only Surgical Critical Care Residency at Maricopa Medical Center, servicing as the Residency Program Director until his move to Abrazo West Campus.
Dr. O’Neill is board-certified in both Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. He earned his BS and PhD in physiology from Michigan State University and his MD from the Medical College of Virginia (Virginia Commonwealth University). He completed his general surgery training at the University of Virginia and his Trauma Surgery / Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Vanderbilt University. Dr. O’Neill has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 2006.
With more than a …decade of experience at Level I trauma centers, Dr. O’Neill brings a great deal of expertise to the Abrazo West Campus Trauma Department. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery for the University of Arizona School of Medicine – Phoenix and an Assistant Professor of Surgery for Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He has been active in the Arizona Trauma Association (formerly known as the Arizona Trauma & Acute Care Consortium (www.aztracc.org)) since 2007 and currently serves as the Past President. His professional memberships include the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST), the Shock Society, the Surgical Infection Society (SIS), the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), and the Western Trauma Association.
Dr. O’Neill has a long and productive research career with over 50 peer-reviewed published works in such prestigious journals as the New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Physiology, Shock, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Clinical Infectious Diseases, Journal of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery, Journal of Pediatric Surgery, and Surgical Infections. Dr. O’Neill has an interest in surgical infections and has served on several national committees for the SIS. He has also served as a reviewer for medical journals such as Critical Care Medicine, Annals of Surgery, and Surgical Infections. In addition, Dr. O’Neill has been an invited speaker to over 100 symposia and conferences over the past 25 years.
Dr. O’Neill has won numerous awards for both research and clinical teaching. Notably he won the Jerry B Scott Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service (Michigan State University), the Young Investigator Competition in Shock Research (Shock Society), the Pillar Recognition Award and Golden Scalpel Award (Maricopa Medical Center), and the Outstanding Physician Award (Donor Network of Arizona).
