I love to give hope to people who haven’t found enough help through conventional medicine, as I’ve personally experienced being told that everything was normal and nothing more could be done for me. After two cancer surgeries and being overwhelmed by food and chemical sensitivities, I decided to figure things out for myself. Despite 25 years of working in medicine, even teaching as a Clinical Professor and Attending Physician at a major medical center, I lacked the training to fully address my own chronic disease problems. My searching eventually led me to the fields of Functional and Integrative Medicine.
Functional Medicine works with the truth that our bodies function as an interrelated whole. I determine whether you have any nutritional deficiencies that can prevent your body from healing or working correctly. I strive to balance your brain neurotransmitters, adrenal, sex, and thyroid hormones, aiming to keep them all at optimum levels. I focus on strengthening your immune …system, as well as addressing underlying dysfunctions and undiagnosed infections in your gut. I test for genetic mutations, as these can affect whether or not certain medications or supplements will either harm you or fail to help you. Genetic Profiles give us another valuable tool for choosing the best treatment plans for you, as a unique individual. I incorporate herbal medicine, acupuncture, and Energy Medicine to enhance your emotional health and decrease your risk for heart disease. Functional Medicine means we no longer treat symptoms, we treat you.
I completed undergraduate degrees in Nursing and Religion, plus a Masters in Public Health Education. I went to medical school and finished my Preventive Medicine residency at Loma Linda University in Southern California, where I then stayed on board as an Assistant Professor for clinical medicine. I’ve been a Keynote Speaker for the Breast Cancer Early Detection Program and worked in Breast Cancer research at Johns Hopkins. I’ve served as a Primary Care physician with Indian Health, Veteran’s Hospitals, College Health Services, and clinics for homeless and underserved populations. I’m currently fulfilling certification programs through the Institute for Functional Medicine and the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine.
I’m excited to be part of the Enspirit Wellness Project, a nonprofit currently under development, that is dedicated to making high quality acupuncture and Integrative Medicine accessible and affordable to those in need.
