A native southerner, Dr. Pendley was born in Atlanta, attended Emory University as a National Merit Scholar and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry. He went on to complete his degree in medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, followed by his internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory. He then was honored to accept a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Basil Hirschowitz at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. During his fellowship he also completed training in aerospace medicine and received certification as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. Following several years of clinical practice in the Carolinas in gastroenterology and internal medicine, Dr. Pendley relocated to Huntsville in 1994 to pursue a practice devoted to gastroenterology, and joined CCDD in January of 1998. Dr. Pendley works primarily from CCDD’s Madison facility.
Dr. Pendley is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty …Board of Gastroenterology. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Physicians, the Southern Medical Association, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and several Air Force and Reserve Medical societies. He has been honored to teach medical students and residents at the Primary Care program at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and continues to enjoy teaching.
A member of the United States Air Force Reserve of many years, Dr. Pendley received the rating of flight surgeon while a member of the 117th Tactical Fighter Wing in the Alabama Air National Guard, and went on to serve as Squadron Flight Surgeon of the 156th Tactical Airlift Squadron in the North Carolina Air National Guard. He remained in the Active Guard and Reserves for eleven years and continues to hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Ready Reserve.
Dr. Pendley is married and has three children. He and his wife Mary Beth are active in Aldersgate Methodist Church where she helped organize the first reading tutor partnership with a school on academic alert, and he sings in the chancel choir. Favorite activities include basketball, reading, tennis, golf, singing, and flying.
