Dr. Stephen Brian Shew, MD

Stephen Shew, MD, FACS, FAAP is a pediatric surgeon who has served on the UCLA School of Medicine faculty since 2004. Dr. Shew earned his B.A. in Biochemistry and Philosophy at the University of California at San Diego, and M.D. at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed his general surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals and trained in pediatric surgery at Children’s Mercy Hospital, specializing in minimally invasive surgery for infants and children. Dr. Shew is board certified in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He is an accredited Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP). Dr. Shew is actively involved in medical school education for students and residents rotating through the pediatric and surgical services at UCLA School of Medicine. He has completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the USDA – Children’s Nutrition Research Center in Houston, …where he worked on protein and energy metabolism of infants utilizing stable isotope methodologies. He has also completed a graduate training program in Translational Investigation at UCLA. His laboratory research at UCLA centers on a novel approach to investigating production of glutathione (the major antioxidant in the body) in critically ill infants in order to determine ways they can recover from their illness without injury from oxidative stress and is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health as well as a grant from the Cargill Foundation. Dr. Shew also investigates broad scale pediatric surgical outcomes for quality health policy measures and works with the state of Califorina’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.
