Dr. Schmitt was trained extensively in pediatric liver transplantation and multiviceral transplantation as a fellow at the University Nebraska. He performed the first small bowel transplant at the University of Virginia and is in the process of expanding the pediatric liver transplant program. Dr. Schmitt revived the cadaveric pediatric liver transplant option at the University of Virginia. He also performs living donor and split liver transplantations, the process in which a whole liver from a donor is divided into two separate grafts for two patients. He specializes in liver surgery, both open and minimally invasive, and also manages patients with bile duct and pancreas issues. Dr. Schmitt has extensive experience taking care of surgical problems in patients with end stage liver disease (cirrhosis).
