How Similar are Trazodone and Xanax

In 2010, Xanax was the twelfth most prescribed medicine in the world. This high rate of prescription makes it a drug of interest among government agencies, health institutions, and the public. People should know if it works to improve the life of patients suffering from certain ailments or if it high level of consumption is without merit.

However, studying it alone would be an erroneous move because it would not provide a benchmark for measuring its effectiveness. Therefore, it is only logical that one should compare Xanax with Trazodone (Desyrel). The two drugs have similar uses, but with varying levels of effectiveness. The side effects on patients who use them also differ, as does their addictiveness. Here is a short overview of Trazodone and Xanax.

Uses of Xanax and Trazodone

Xanax is useful when it comes to the treatment of severe and moderate panic attacks. However, studies show that it is most effective against these attacks if used within four to ten weeks following the onset of the condition.

Xanax is also suitable when it comes to treating anxiety disorders associated with depression. Again, the effectiveness of the drug is highest within the first four months following the onset of the disorder.

Finally, Xanax also helps to deal with nausea that may result from chemotherapy treatment.

In contrast, the chief use of Trazodone is the treatment of depression. This drug will help you improve your appetite, mood, and energy levels making a depressed person livelier than they would be without it. It does so by restoring the balance of serotonin in the brain. Scientists believe that serotonin, which is a specialized neurotransmitter in the body, contributes to feelings of happiness in a person. Because of these properties, Trazodone is also suitable in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

Another medicinal use for the drug is treating insomnia though this particular use hasn’t been approved by FDA so far.

Side effects of Xanax and Trazodone

The side effects of using Xanax may include dizziness, drowsiness, change in sexual drive, and increased production of saliva. Serious effects that need immediate medical attention include hallucinations, slurred speech, memory lapses, and walking difficulties. Remember, Xanax is addictive so only use it as per your doctor's instructions.

The side effects of Trazodone include drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, and blurred vision. Other side effects are changes in weight, muscles aches, fatigue, constipation, and change in sexual drive. Moreover, a person may feel a bad taste in the mouth or just a dry mouth. Serious side effects such as seizures, vision changes, fainting, irregular heartbeat, or eye swelling (although manifest extremely rarely) require immediate medical attention.
