Deena Berkowitz, MD, MPH, is an assistant professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Children’s National and the Department of Pediatrics in the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. After receiving a BA in History from Columbia College in New York in 1994, she moved to New Haven to attend Yale School of Medicine. Concurrently she completed an MPH in health administration at the Yale School of Public Health, and was awarded a joint MD-MPH in 1999. After pediatric house-staff training at Yale-New Haven Hospital she moved to the mid-Atlantic region to Children’s National where she completed a Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship between 2004 and 2007. In 2007, she joined the Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty at Childrens National where she serves as an attending clinician and medical director of RTU, the fast track division of the Emergency Department. Additionally, she is the …medical supervisor of the physician assistants and nurse practitioners on staff in the ED. In these roles she has the opportunity to mentor young physicians and midlevel providers while evaluating, implementing and improving the efficiency of administrative and program operations. Dr. Berkowitz is board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. Dr. Berkowitzs primary academic focus is on health care reform, resource utilization and practice variation.
