My favorite thing about practicing psychiatry is seeing people feel better and succeed better in life as their symptoms and problems improve. Tell me what you’ve been going through, and we’ll take it from there. I want to understand. What are the main things you want help with? We’ll do a process called psychiatric evaluation, during which I ask you a lot of questions and arrive at diagnoses. Your specific symptoms and situations will guide whether I will recommend medication treatment and which medications I will recommend. The decision about whether to take any medication is yours. I will always recommend psychotherapy (talking therapy.) Combining psychotherapy with medication (when needed) generally gets better results than either of these used alone. My psychotherapy approach is mostly EFT (Emotionally Focussed Therapy, see below.) I will provide EFT as well as using elements of supportive, psychodynamic, and cognitive behavioral therapies. Psychotherapy seeks to assist you in …freeing yourself from unhappy, unhelpful patterns, so that you can achieve your goals in life.
I was born and mostly raised in Ann Arbor Michigan, lived in Hawaii for thirty years, and lived in Oakland since 2004. I graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a BA, graduated from medical school and completed psychiatric residency at the University of Hawaii, and am board certified in psychiatry. I worked for my first twelve years after training in a Healthcare for the Homeless Project, and helped birth a specialized shelter for severely psychiatrically ill homeless people. Since then I have worked in hospital wards and outpatient clinics. In my free time I love to dance. I’m looking forward to meeting you!
EFT is an attachment science-based approach to individual, couple, and family therapy that offers humanistic experiential interventions focused on reshaping experience and reshaping patterns of engagement with significant others. Emotion is given precedence because of its powerful role in structuring both inner experience and motivation and key interactional patterns in relationships. Emotion links and organizes core experience and interaction. Whether you feel balanced in your emotions, out of touch with your emotions, or overwhelmed by your emotions, EFT helps with many different kinds of problems and people.
