Dr. Schmitz received his medical degree from the University of Washington in 1990. After performing an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at the University of Rochester in New York in 1996. Having practiced orthopedic surgery for eleven years, he recently accomplished a one-year fellowship in spine surgery at Harvard Medical School. His focus is on spine surgery and sports medicine/arthroscopy, while continuing general orthopedics. Dr. Schmitz is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
