Dr Nickolai Talanin, MD

Dr. Nickolai Talanin came to the United States from Russia after graduating with honors from Tashkent State Medical Institute, completing his clinical internship in dermatology and later receiving his Ph.D. in Immunology and Medicine from the Kirov Military Medical Academy, one of the world’s oldest schools of military medicine, located in St. Petersburg, Russia. Following his arrival in the United States as an accomplished Russian-trained dermatologist, Dr. Talanin held a position of Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Ohio. There, he pursued research in different aspects of dermatology under the guidance of, and in collaboration with, Drs. Walter and Dorinda Shelley, the two of the most esteemed and renowned American dermatologists.
Dr. Talanin completed his U.S. residency training in Dermatology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis, after which he continued clinical research as a fellow at the National Cancer Institute’s Dermatology Branch …of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest and one of the foremost biomedical research centers in the world. His research efforts resulted in more than 40 publications in the leading professional journals, including The Lancet, JAMA, British Medical Journal, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology, and Journal of Investigative Dermatology among others.
Dr. Talanin’s clinical research interests spanned psoriasis, dermatomiosytis, bullous diseases, skin cancers, and skin fungal infections, the pioneering study on using the botulinum toxin to reduce sweating, and even the history of medicine and changes in the societal approach to illness and disease from ancient times to the present, to name a few. For his thorough research, Dr. Talanin earned the Young Investigator’s award from the American Academy of Dermatology and the Albert M. Kligman Fellowship award from the Society for Investigative Dermatology.
Following his passion for caring for patients with skin diseases, Dr. Talanin took his research and clinical expertise to the medical practice setting, when, in 2002, he joined U.S. Dermatology Partners (formerly Dermatology Associates of Northern Virginia). There, he treated thousands of  patients for over 18 years before, at the end of 2020, transitioning to the Clinical Dermatology Center, where he is a co-founder, a managing partner, and the principal physician.
Dr. Talanin is an accomplished, board-certified dermatologist.  He is an active member of both the American Academy of Dermatology and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.  Throughout his career, Dr. Talanin has received numerous awards and accolades, and has most recently been spotlighted by the Washingtonian Magazine and the Northern Virginia Magazine as Top Dermatologist.
While dermatology remains his main focus and passion, Dr. Talanin successfully shares it with a number of active hobbies, including international cultural cooperation and love for music and performing arts. Dr. Talanin is an avid gardener, historian, and art collector and enjoys serving as an International Council member for the Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens in Washington, DC.
