Robert Stephenson, MD, is a professor in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery, at the University of Utah School of Medicine and an investigator at Huntsman Cancer Institute. He holds the Jon M. Huntsman Presidential Endowed Chair in Urological Oncology.
Stephenson has published numerous articles regarding urological oncology, most notably carcinoma of the prostate. He is recognized for the development of animal models for human prostate cancer and for devising surgical methods to improve treatment of prostate carcinoma. He has done research using high-technology surgical and radiation therapies to treat prostate and kidney tumors and investigates prostate cancer treatment outcomes in national population-based databases. Stephenson is also involved in the study of genetic risk factors and prostate cancer tumor marker research.
Stephenson specializes in the treatment of urologic cancers, with the goal of improving overall quality of life for his patients. He has extensive …experience in laparoscopic prostate surgery using the robot-assisted DaVinci system.
Stephenson received his medical degree from the University of Utah in 1978. He completed an internship at the University of California, Los Angeles; a residency at Stanford University; and a fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Following his specialty training, Stephenson was director of urologic oncology at Tufts University School of Medicine. From there, he went to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
