Dr. Selman Welt first came to Johnson City in 1981 straight from a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship and faculty appointment at Duke with the UNC Medical School and a detour to St. Louis for OB/GYN fellowship. The first MFM in the region, Dr. Welt was the OB director of the Perinatal Center. He left East Tennessee in 1990 for personal reasons but his daughters stayed her while he sojourned in Texas. After years at Texas Tech and the University of West Virginia he returned in 2009 to resume his activities in MFM, Ultrasound and the Perinatal Center. His two girls have moved up the East Coast but still visit the Tri-Cities area regularly. Dr. Welt still can’t get over how old all those babies he delivered in the 1980’s are looking. He new hobbies are gardening, reading and when possible, traveling. Dr. Welt is currently practicing with ETSU OB/GYN.
