After 5+ years in practice with the University of Miami Department of Orthopedic Surgery, where I developed an expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery, I moved to the Midwest and joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation in November 2013. In the wintertime people ask me if I am crazy to move here from Miami, but frankly I love it here in Madison. The hospital is excellent and there is a real need for minimally invasive techniques here. Minimally invasive techniques are the future of spine surgery. My clinical and research interests are focused on minimally invasive techniques, but I also know when more conventional techniques are appropriate. Not everybody who comes to my clinic needs surgery, actually I think I am very conservative when it comes to recommending an operation. But when surgery is appropriate, we can talk through the options, with careful consideration given to the minimally invasive options.
